100KHz Crystal Calibrator Kit for tube type rigs

Boat AnchorsSo you bought that old Galaxy V or National tube type transceiver and got it running, but you're not sure exactly how good the VFO's calibration, or how linear the output is.

An easy way to check calibration of your VFO is by way of a 100 KHz oscillator loosely couple to the receiver. This should should allow you to adjust the dial calbration at 100 KHz intervals and allow for less uncertainty when tuning the bands. Unfortunately, most of the older rigs that had those options fitted have had those useful bits removed and pressed into service elsewhere. The Galaxy transceivers had optional plug in 100 KHz or 25KHz calibrators but they're hard to find today, and if you do find one- it may need repair. If you're looking to enhance your operation of the radio, why not build and install a solid state modern calibrator?

A 100 KHz crystal calbrator is a very useful tool for the radio experimenter and Grandpa's Electronics has designed a nifty little kit that sells for about $18- check out the calibrator kit here- it looks like a great kit!

 Gonset GSB-201 Mark IV Manual

Boat AnchorsHi Guys, Not a huge story here except that I spent about 4 hours putting together a new manual for the Gonset GSB-201 covering all versions from the original to the Mark IV.

You can find the manual linked here

It seems the GSB-201 was the only product to make it through all the various owners of the Gonset Company. From what I understand it was first sold to Young Spring & Wire and became Gonset Division of Young Spring & Wire, then sold to Altec Lansing, Layco Inc, and finally Gonset was sold to Aerotron Inc who appear to have given up around the same time as Galaxy Electronics. Perhaps some of you reader can comment on the history of Faust Gonsett's ex Gonset Corporation? No doubt the GSB-201 is a classic design. The fact it endured continuous production from about 1962 through to 1970 says a lot- though I am not sure Mr. Gonsett was involved in this design as it was released about the time he founded SBE.

Hallicrafters, The S38 Guy and Low Power AM Broadcasting

Boat AnchorsBrian Ripley, K8BR of Ogden, Utah has a great site devoted to the care and restoration of the Hallicrafters S-38 series. These are pretty neat little radios. I own a S-38C myself. They are not the most sensitive things but are great for listening to the local AM stations or if you get yourself a nice Low Power AM transmitter, you can stream your own Old Time Radio shows to your home and neighborhood.

Here is a link to Brian's site, TheS38Guy.com. Read on for details on setting up your own Low Power AM Station.

 SBE SB-33 Review

Boat AnchorsI just acquired an old SBE SB-33 rig. This unit has been called the first modern solid-state Amateur Radio Transceiver. It's about the same size as a modern Icom IC-718 and includes a power supply!

The purists amoung you may argue this is not a Boat Anchor but the radio does use tubes for the driver and finals and it is a classic rig

 Galaxy V Revival

Boat AnchorsN4BKT writes "Hi All,

I just got back from a weekend at my Dad's (KC4KM)

We've been re-working a Galaxy V (Serial Number 560V1565) that we picked up a the Stuart Hamfest. I thought I'd relate what we've been up to in bringing the rig back to life.
